How To: Write an Officiant’s Speech

officiant speaking at altar

Are you having someone close conduct the wedding ceremony but… are all of you are unsure of where to start? No problem! Following up on our “Planning Your Ceremony” blog, we wanted to expand a bit further by providing you all with a quick, sample speech for those of you that are having a cherished friend or family member perform the ceremony. This speech is very basic and is a great jumping-off point in helping you prepare for the day! Feel free to change adjectives, phrases, or the whole thing! Follow our blog post above to see where to add in readings, unity ceremonies, and more. We hope this helps!

“Please rise. (to be said for bride’s entrance).

Please be seated. (to be said when bride has reached the altar)

Welcome! We are gathered here today in the presence of family and friends for the purpose of uniting in marriage FULL NAME and FULL NAME. Today we share in the joy of this memorable occasion.

First Name and First Name, before you exchange vows, I have some words to share with you….Marriage symbolizes the intimate sharing of two lives. It is the development of a balanced relationship that is continually growing and changing. Acceptance of each other’s differences and appreciation of each other’s individuality creates an atmosphere of understanding and trust where not only joys and successes but also sorrows and disappointments can be shared. Deep knowledge of each other’s feelings can only develop fully with patience, genuine caring, and respect. This understanding of each other can be the greatest and most fulfilling experience of your lives. No other human ties are more tender and no other vows are more important than those you now assume. If you both keep these vows, your home will be happy and full of joy.

First Name and First Name will now read aloud their own personal vows to each other...

Will the Best Man/Person of Honor please present the rings??

First Name, place the ring on First Name’s ring finger and repeat after me:

With this ring, I thee wed

I will love, honor, and cherish you

From this day until our last.

First Name, place the ring on First Name’s ring finger and repeat after me:

With this ring, I thee wed

I will love, honor, and cherish you

From this day until our last.

When we marry, we receive something tangible. We gain a partner. We gain a lifelong friend. We belong. Your hearts, minds, and souls are now forever intertwined on your path through life.

First Name and First Name, on behalf of the family and friends who are here to witness your vows, and by the authority vested in me by the state of ______, I now pronounce you husband and wife (or “I now pronounce you a married couple”)!

First Name, you may now kiss your bride/groom/partner! (or, just simply ‘You may now kiss!).

Ladies and Gentlemen , it is my pleasure to present to you for the very first time ____________.”
